Emergence

Emergence
photography
James Robertson

Emergence is the revealing of shapes and forms in the ordinary, transformed through light and shadow. This is an exploration of the objects and scenes that during the bright light of day pass unnoticed, but when viewed with different eyes form dramatic abstract shapes.

Most of these photos are taken at night, although a few are pre-dawn. At these times, drawing out the photo also brings out the saturation in the image, creating vivid colours and lines. This also removes objects from their context, stripping them of default meaning.

From thousands of photos taken, these few have been drawn out to form an emergent collection. The act of making the set was itself iterative, with each image influencing the selection of others, until the overall shape was revealed.

While digital, most of these photos have not been significantly edited in Photoshop, other than some minor cleaning up. The colours have not been altered or heightened.
